FME Sockets

FME Sockets
Foreign Material Exclusion

Many times during a maintenance project, small objects can fall into a turbine, generator or engine. Retrieving dropped objects is time consuming and expensive. We have designed FME tools that address this problem.

"Stop the Drop"

Our FME Sockets can be used in several applications.

FME Socket for Gap Baffle Nut

FME tools used on the GE Generator Gap Baffle Nut

This specific application for the nut capturing socket is used on the GE Generator Gap Baffle Nut which is very difficult to reach by hand. Our FME tool used with extensions, makes it possible to remove or engage the nut and keep it from falling during the process.

The nut is engaged by placing the Nut Capturing Socket over the nut. A twist of the Nut Capturing Socket aligns both hexes (hex on face of Nut Capturing socket and hex of internal socket) so the nut passes through the face plate hex and into the socket hex. The face plate hex being under tension, will snap back holding the nut in place allowing for the nut to be threaded on a stud without falling out of the socket. Once the nut is threaded down, a twist of the Nut Capturing Socket with a ratchet takes the tension from the face plate hex allowing for the socket to be pulled away.

To remove the nut, engage the nut with the socket. The nut will enter the face plate hex, then twist the Nut Capturing Socket to align both hexes. Push the Nut Capturing Socket over the nut until the Nut Capturing Socket becomes flush with the surface of the object the nut is threaded on. The tension from the outer face plate hex will hold the nut in place as it is being removed.
